Predator Evasion by a Robocrab

چکیده
We describe the first robot designed to emulate specific perceptual and motor capabilities of the fiddler crab. An omnidirectional robot platform uses onboard computation to process images from a 360◦ camera view, filtering it through a biological model of the crab’s ommatidia layout, extracting potential ‘predator’ cues, and executing an evasion response that also depends on contextual information. We show that, as for real crabs, multiple cues are needed for effective escape in different predator-prey scenarios.

Predator evasion by white-tailed deer fawns
Please cite this article in press as: Grovenbur j.anbehav.2012.04.005 Despite their importance for understanding predatoreprey interactions, factors that affect predator evasion behaviours of offspring of large ungulates are poorly understood. Our objective was to characterize the influence of selection and availability of escape cover and maternal presence on predator evasion by white-tailed d...
متن کاملMultiple sensory modalities used by squid in successful predator evasion throughout ontogeny.
Squid rely on multiple sensory systems for predator detection. In this study we examine the role of two sensory systems, the lateral line analogue and vision, in successful predator evasion throughout ontogeny. Squid Doryteuthis pealeii and Lolliguncula brevis were recorded using high-speed videography in the presence of natural predators under light and dark conditions with their lateral line ...

Lateral line analogue aids vision in successful predator evasion for the brief squid, Lolliguncula brevis.
Cephalopods have visual and mechanoreception systems that may be employed to sense and respond to an approaching predator. While vision presumably plays the dominant role, the importance of the lateral line analogue for predator evasion has not been examined in cephalopods. To test the respective roles of vision and the lateral line analogue, brief squid, Lolliguncula brevis, were observed in t...
متن کاملOn the Interplay of Predator Switching and Prey Evasion in Determining the Stability of Predator–prey Dynamics
Traditionally, predator switching has been assumed to be a stabilizing force in ecological systems. Recent work, however, has shown that predator switching can be either stabilizing or destabilizing. Most models of predator switching, to date, assume that prey are behaviorally passive and do not respond to predators. We allowed prey to respond behaviorally to predators, so as to avoid capture, ...
